Your candle’s wick has been precut to the proper length so there is no need for you do anything but light and enjoy!  Speaking of lighting… whether you are an avid wood wick lover or have just purchased your first, below are some tips to help you fully enjoy your candle and keep it burning beautifully! Stick lighters work best for wood wick candles. Do not use a torch lighter, matches or sparkwheel lighter.

Tilt candle and place the lighter next to the wick, lighting it at the base where the wax meets the wick. Allow the flame to travel the entire width of the wick until the entire wick is lit (it is the wax that fuels the wick). Repeat if necessary. Do not light the wick from the top, this will damage the wick and prevent a good burn.

On first burn, allow the candle to burn until the melt pool reaches out to the edges, ideally 3-4 hours, or approximately 1 hour per inch of the diameter of the candle container. The time it takes will vary depending on the size of the candle. Doing so will train the wick how to properly burn and the wax how to properly melt and help prevent tunneling.

If the candle is not allowed to burn for the necessary length of time so that the melt pool reaches the sides of the jar, the subsequent burns may result in tunneling down the center of the jar. This is especially important for larger candles.

With larger candles, it is best to perform first burn when you have the necessary time to allow the melt pool to reach the  edges. Failing to do so may result in tunneling on subsequent burns.

On subsequent burns, tend to the wick if needed. If the length is longer than ¼ “, or there is excess char on the wick,  gently break off the excess with your fingers. Do not cut the wick with scissors or wick trimmer.

If the wick will not stay lit, check for excess char, and remove. If there does not appear to be excess char, gently scrape  the top of the wick with lighter tip and try again. If that does not fix the problem, refer to “wick drowning” below.

If when burning the candle for a long period of time you notice the flame height getting too low, it may be necessary to tap off any excess ash along the top of the wick. The flame will then return to its proper optimal height.

If it appears that the wick is drowning, use a piece of paper towel, rolled over several times, and soak up excess wax. You may need to repeat this step a couple of times until the flame reaches optimal height.

If the candle begins to tunnel, extinguish the flame, and use a hairdryer on highest setting to melt the wax down until it is level again. Allow to fully cool before relighting.

The candle will extinguish itself when the wax gets below 3/8”.

✓ Do not burn in areas with ceiling fans, drafts, or breezes, this may cause a faulty burn and create tunneling.

✓ Do not move the candle while burning, this may cause injury or faulty burn.

✓ Do not burn a candle longer than 4 hours at a time.

✓ Always burn candles on a heat resistant surface and away from any fabric or items that may catch fire.
